Veritas Forum 2010

This year we hosted our 2nd Veritas Forum at UCSF with Dr. Ard Louis from Oxford University. Ard made the circuit at Stanford and UCSF, and we had the privilege of hearing his perspective on whether "Science Can Explain Everything?" His reasoning from acknowledging the limits of science and what he calls "tapestry arguments" provide a compelling view on how to manage the questions of life that can be informed by but not completely answered by science alone. Catching up on Veritas 2009 with Dr. Bill Newsome

Just over a year ago on Cinco de mayo, we celebrated our first Veritas Forum at UCSF with a conversation with Dr. Bill Newsome, chair of neurobioloigy at Stanford. Veritas Forum at UCSF - this Tuesday, May 5th!

The Veritas Forum at UCSF is just around the corner! We've ordered the food (burritos, in honor of Cinco de mayo!), set up the logistics, and let our publicity engine loose to get the word out to the campus and community. I hope that you can join us at Cole Hall (513 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco, UCSF) on May 5th, 6-8pm. Bring a hungry stomach, bring a friend, and bring your questions to the talk and open Q&A!

And if you haven't heard...there's a Veritas Lunch the following day, May 6th, from 12-1pm (room TBD, on Parnassus). Please join us to hear from Jonathan Lew, Western Regional Director of the Veritas Forum, as he shares more about Veritas and how you might get involved!

Veritas Forum at UCSF on May 5th!

We've scheduled our Veritas Forum date and place, and we're honored to have Bill Newsome as our speaker. Newsome is chair of neurobiology at Stanford and renowned for both his work on the intersection of primate research and ethics and the intersection of science and faith. At our forum, he'll be talking on the latter:

Science and faith: the vantage point of one neuroscientist

I am a practicing scientist and a practicing Christian—commitments that are inconsistent in the minds of many. While I encounter tension at times between my science and my faith, my overwhelming belief is that both science and faith contribute critically to a meaningful, fully-experienced human life. Giving up either would result in a regrettable loss of understanding, depth of experience, and simple joy in my life. I believe that much of the perceived incompatibility between science and religion is specious, although real tensions do exist. In this talk I will lay out the central issues from my point of view, hoping to dispel some of the false conflicts between science and faith while bringing into focus real choices that need to be made.

You can find our more about his research as an HHMI investigator as well as his life history and scientific career path. And of course, a sample of one of his talks at a Christian conference (scroll down).

Veritas Planning Meeting 0.03

Web Server Down 11/28, 10pm - 11/29, 10am

UPDATE (2008-11-39, 9:48am): The server upgrade is complete, and service to stuffy.hopto.org (and related websites) is restored.

The CCF web server will be down for a server upgrade from 11/28, 10pm - 11/29, 10am. We will be upgrading the server software from Fedora 9 to Fedora 10 to take advantage of the many refinements and polish included in this latest release of the Fedora open source powerhouse.

New Website Address: sfcampus.org

We have a new website address! With the UCSF web server transition complete, we decided to register an official domain name for CCF. Our private server allows us greater flexibility in web hosting, and sfcampus.org as our shorter domain name will hopefully be more memorable than http://rco.ucsf.edu/indep.php/ccf. But if you forget it, you can still visit our old address to see the new one!

Veritas: 2nd planning meeting

Planning for a Veritas event at UCSF is just getting underway. We'll be having our 2nd planning meeting, and you are all more than welcome to join us. I see Veritas as a wonderful way for our fellowships to connect through planning and outreach.

Our planning meeting is this Monday (8/25) at 7pm, David's place. We'll be focusing on speaker selection, topic/question refinement, and creative venue brainstorming. Please let me know if you're interested in coming or keeping updated on Veritas.

Where Did Our Website Go?

The UCSF server for registered campus organizations (including ours) was recently decommissioned, and the Office of Student Life (OSL) server arose in its stead. In the process however our website has been temporarily dismantled, and we are looking for a new host that will allow us to use our customized website. We do not yet have access to edit our CCF OSL page, but when we do, we'll provide information on finding our new site. And of course we'll keep you updated here.

Veritas Forum Coming to UCSF

Veritas Forum is a national event-oriented organization focused on creating events on campuses addressing the tough questions regarding life and faith. Our neighboring universities recently hosted Francis Collins and Tim Keller during campus events designed to engage their student bodies on theistic evolution ("biologos") and the reason for God in the face of seemingly perpetual doubt. And now Veristas is coming to UCSF!

Our campus is uniquely positioned as a graduate health sciences campus to focus on the demanding scientific or philosophical questions that crop up regarding our faith. We as a student community have the opportunity to design a topic that we feel would engage the community, invite a speaker who could communicate the issues and its relevance to Jesus in our lives, and create an atmosphere for open and honest discussion with our friends and colleagues.

As an event for the campus, Veritas would be best planned by the campus fellowships. If you or interested members of your fellowships would like to attend our first planning meeting, on July 14, 7pm, please let us know, and we would be happy to get you more information and answer any of your questions.

"World's Largest Medical Missions Conference Opens"

"The world’s largest medical missions conference opened Thursday, welcoming an estimated 3,000 people interested in ministering through medicine.

Christians from throughout the world converged in Louisville, Ky., for the 12th Global Missions Health Conference to network, train and strategize on how to better carry out the Great Commission and recruit the next generation of healthcare missionaries."

A Few New Features

A few new features have been added to allow more up-to-date fellowship content. On the frontpage you'll notice the Fellowships Calendar, a single calendar integrating schedules from a variety of fellowships. If you hop over to the Fellowships page, one subtle improvement is the enablement of javascript content in the main content area. What this means is that fellowships can add dynamic content, such as more calendars, slideshows, etc, right in their group's area.

If your fellowship has a Google calendar, I'd be happy to add it to the Fellowships Calendar. I can also add other javascript content to your area on the Fellowships page as well as any other updates for your group. A note has been added on the Resources page about how to keep your group's info up-to-date.

Welcome to the New CCF Website

Yes! Refreshed! The CCF website has undergone a complete overhaul ahead of the upcoming school year. My hope is that the website combines the familiar structure of the old site, plus new features to make it even easier to get acquainted with the fellowships here at UCSF!

A couple highlights from the new site:

Fellowship Browser: Right on the homepage you can browse through the various fellowships. Find out what day of the week they meet, learn their vision, and click the link to more info on the Fellowships page! If you lead a fellowship, you can add your fellowship, too.
Blog and Discussion Feeds: CCF has both the blog you're reading now and a Google Group that you can browser and post to. The latest posts are fed right onto the CCF site.
CCF FAQ: Always wonder what CCF is? Now you can get the scoop on the About page.
CCF Fellowship Leaders Google Group: Leading a fellowship can at times be isolation. Over the next year I hope that leaders from different fellowships at UCSF can meet and begin to encourage one another. One way to keep in touch is via an online, private community group for leaders.
Faster website loading, easier navigation: My hope is that the site is quicker to navigate through and easier to find what you're looking for.

Website Beta Status Update

A week ago we announced the launch of our CCF website beta sneakpeak, where you could watch the progress of our website overhaul. Not much was there to start with, but we've done considerable work to the front page over the past few days. You can take a peak for yourself at http://www.ucsf.edu/ccf/beta.

A few highlights:

Fellowships Catalog: Since CCF is about fellowships, we wanted to put a fellowships catalog right in the front page. More tabs will be added to provide a quick, encapsulated view of each fellowship on campus.
Tabbed Page Nav: We've taken advantage of AJAX scripts to provide a tabbed-style navigation that brings you straight to the content of each page, without having to reload the whole page. The hope is that navigation among pages will be quick and seamless. Right now it's just the front page, but please keep your eyes peeled for more content to come.
Sidebar Sidekick: After playing around with different sidebar implementations, we're trying out a simpler interface. The new feed runs from a script utilizing the Google AJAX API to allow in-page feed refreshes. In other words, you can update the feed without having to reload the whole page!

There's still lots of work left. If you have any suggestions/comments, we would love to hear them!

New CCF Website Beta

The CCF website is getting an extreme makeover! You can watch the progress at our beta page. Our goal is to make it more usable by all UCSF fellowships, both for gathering and posting new content. Any feedback is appreciated!

Veritas Forum coming to UCSF

Veritas Forum, an event-based organization promoting speaker forums on controversial science and religious issues throughout the nation, is coming to UCSF in the upcoming school year. Veritas started at Harvard in 1992 and has held events at institutions ranging from Columbia and MIT to CalPoly and UC Berkeley. Mostly focusing on undergrads, Veritas is beginning to branch out to the grad community with UCSF.

The topic this year is, "Suffering: Where is God in all of this?" A panel of guest speakers will share from their perspectives on suffering, followed by an open discussion from the audience. Plans are in the works for a cafe outreach afterward.

All are invited to attend the planning process this Winter and Spring. CMDA is hosting the event and has scheduled planning meetings for 2/28 (S-163) and 3/6 (Nursetaria). Please contact Jen Min if you have any questions.

We launched the Campus Christian Fellowship website
(http://www.ucsf.edu/ccf/) about a year ago as a way to introduce
newcomers to Christian opportunities on campus, and it's come time for
a website update.

One source of encouragement to newcomers would be mini-testimonies
from you. If you could briefly answer any one of the following
questions (eg 1-2 sentences), we'll add it to the page sidebars.

-What's been one of your biggest sources of encouragement this year?
-How has God used other brothers/sisters to challenge you at UCSF?
-What one spiritual tip would you give to someone new to UCSF?
-How did you pick a church in SF?

...or anything else that God may lead you to share.

Urbana 2006

Hi Guys,

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Urbana is happening this year. It’s this awesome, awesome mission’s conference that InterVarsity puts on for students. It usually happens at University of Illinois-Urbana, but this year it’ll be in St. Louis Missouri. It only happens every 3 years and usually there’s 20,000 students from around North America.

The website is www.urbana.org

The early bird registration deadline is October 15 and the conference is December 27-31. (You actually get to count down to the new year with everyone and have an awesome praise session before and after).

But anyway, think and pray about it. This is what got me to get involved with cross-cultural missions. Hope you can do this year. J

CCF Website Goes Live!

Just in time for Christmas, the CCF website has officially gone live! Now when you point your browser to http://www.ucsf.edu/ccf, you'll find our redesigned website, complete with fresh pix, spazzy new navigation, and tons of new content.

Why all the newness? Because over the past 6 months, CCF has undergone a rebirth. In our pages you'll find our new vision and the opportunity to take advantage of our new and growing resources. Our desire is to bring out the Campus in Campus Christian Fellowship so that all those who seek to know Christ better can find support and fellowship wherever they are on campus.
